Ron Roberts

Former Cornwall resident, broadcaster Ron Roberts, self-dubbed “The Rotund One”, passed away in Halifax following a short illness. Ron began his radio career in Cornwall at CJSS in the late ’40s, hired by then-manager Harrison Flint. Further career stops included CFRA Ottawa where he worked for Frank Ryan and with Fred Davis. Next came Chatham, Ont, Massena and Syracuse NY, and CJAD Montreal, then settling in Halifax radio in the early ’70s. Ron was an ardent Frank Sinatra fan and treasured an autographed photo received from his idol. He is survived by his sister Eleanor Reid of Almonte, Ont; nieces Lynn Upson of Brantford, Ont., Robyn Johnson of Kingston, Ont. and Jocelyn McPhail of Almonte, Ont; nephews Jack Roberts of London, Ont., Jeff Evason of Maryland, USA and cousin Joan Evason of Cornwall Ont. Ron was predeceased by his parents, Lambert and Kathleen Roberts, and older brother Maurice. A memorial service has been planned for mid-June in Halifax. He will be missed.
