The family is sad to announce the passing of Gene (Eugene Edward) Fitzgibbons on Tuesday, January 27, 1998 at Mount Sinai Hospital in his 76th year.Beloved husband of Betty for 52 years, loving father of Mary Jane Sallinen of Parry Sound, Robert of Toronto, loving grandfather of Nicholas Sallinen. Father-in-law to John Sallinen. Dear brother of Kevin (Kathleen) of Toronto, and Robert (Gert) of Australia. Predeceased by Yvonne, John, Helen and Arthur. As one of the Canadian Cable Television Pioneers, he was responsible for helping to establish numerous Cable Television Systems in Canada, including the former Toronto Metro Cable System. Sales Exec. 20th Century Fox– St. Louis, Managing Director Paramount Windsor Theatres, Exec. Director CKCO T.V. Kitchener, CFCM–T.V. Quebec City, V.P. Famous Players Theatres, V.P. Canadian Cable Systems, V.P. Selkirk Communications Ltd., Pres. Selkirk Communications Inc., Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He served in the United States 10th Air Force, 490th Bombardment Squadron in the China–Burma–India Theatre; awarded the Bronze Star while in Burma. Long time member of Lambton Golf and Country Club. Friends will be received at the Turner & Porter Yorke Chapel, 2357 Bloor Street West, at Windermere, near the Jane subway on Thursday, January 29 from 3 – 6 p.m. Funeral Mass will be held at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church, 3055 Bloor Street West (Bloor and Royal York Road) on Friday, January 30, 1998 at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, a memorial donation to the Lung Association or to the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated.
