Vernon’s Kitchener-Waterloo Directories of CKCO-TV Employees
(CKKW-AM Employees added to lists beginning in 1964)
(CFCA-FM Employees added to lists beginning in 1969)
City directories were a popular form of publication from the mid-1870s until the mid-2010s. Each directory typically contained both an alphabetical listing of all residents by last name as well as the type of business they are involved in and a listing of residents by street. It also included a business index, as well as various advertisements for local businesses on each page.
Most directory publishers have used the same method of information gathering in compiling their directories, the door-to-door canvass. Information is given to a canvasser on a voluntary basis or if the resident is not at home, an information slip is left, which the resident may or may not choose to fill in and return to the publisher. The use of the door-to-door canvass resulted in a number of problems with the directories, such as lack of comprehensiveness and inaccuracy.
On this site you may see the name of an employee, their job position and in one instance their wife, change from one year to the next. In some cases, people may appear one year, disappear the next and then re-appear again the next year. Employees living outside of the Kitchener-Waterloo were more likely to be missing even though we know that they worked in the building continously until their retirement. Ron Beatty for instance, once listed as living in Elmira, disappeared from the 1969 Vernon’s.
