Joe Ulmer
March 8, 1955 – September 20, 2025
With deep sorrow, we announce the passing of Joseph (Joe) on September 20, 2025, at home in Kitchener at the age of 70.
Beloved husband of Cathy Miehm for 34 years. Treasured dad of Joey (Brittney), Julia (Brayden), and Michael, all of Kitchener. Dear brother of Jane Huck of Kitchener and John Ulmer (Mary), of Kanata. Brother-in-law to Jerry Miehm (Cathy) of New Westminster, B.C., His Excellency Bishop Daniel Miehm of Peterborough, and Mike Miehm (Joanne) of Kitchener. He will be greatly missed by his nieces and nephews and their families.
Joe was predeceased by his parents John and Dorothy Ulmer, in-laws Jerry and Theresa Miehm, and brother-in-law Peter Huck.
Joe was born and raised in Kitchener, graduating from St. Jerome’s High School and Conestoga College. He worked for almost 40 years as an editor at CKCO-TV (CTV Kitchener), retiring in 2017. He delighted in working with so many brilliant and witty colleagues during an era “when TV was fun.” He cherished those memories and shared them often.

Above all else, Joe was a loving husband and devoted father. His keen intelligence, slightly absurd sense of humour and innate kindness made every day a joy. Those traits are mirrored in the lively personalities of his sons and daughter, of whom he was so very proud. They carry his light into the future.
Joe was fortunate to have a wide circle of great friends, with whom he shared many laughs and adventures. He thoroughly enjoyed progressive dinners with the neighbours, travels to Europe and Asia, Lake Huron sunsets with family and friends, weekend visits to Windsor, and annual trips to Niagara. Many of these friends helped us navigate Joe’s final weeks. We are so grateful to Laura, Chris, Christa, Mirko, Karen, Bob, Stacey, Shelly, Dave, Ute, Rhonda, and Brad.
Our deepest thanks to Dr. Lana Tan and the dedicated palliative team of nurses and PSWs who helped Joe and the entire family through six very difficult weeks – especially Chantelle, Hannah, and Rick.
Finally, there are simply not enough words to thank Madonna Voutier, Brayden Bulhao, Lisa Warren, and Horst and Betty Weiler for their steadfast support and kindness – you helped all of us bear the unbearable.
A Celebration of Life will take place this autumn. As expressions of sympathy, Joe’s family would greatly appreciate donations to Hospice Waterloo Region.
