Alexander Duthie
December 1, 1926 – March 21, 2009
Alexander Mitchell Duthie, Dip. Arch (Abdn), M.R.A.I.C., A.R.I.B.A. Died peacefully and in comfort at home of natural causes in his 83rd year. Beloved husband of Gloria (Craig) for 50 years. (predeceased 1999) Dear father of Melisande (Donald) Neal, Laura Duthie, and Eleanor Duthie (Paul Adamson). Grandfather to Sandy (Heather) Neal, Thatcher Neal, Hillary Neal, Sebastian Neal and Harley Adamson, Raven Adamson, Dagmar Adamson and Sacha Adamson. Uncle and cousin to many in Scotland. Good friend to Julie Griffin. And constant companion to Jocko his dog.
Sandy (and Alex as he was known in years of late) will be missed as a colourful character in the village of Millbrook. Sandy was an accomplished architect who did many projects locally, probably best known for designing Calhoun’s IGA/Foodland. Scotland was where he was born and raised and married his art college sweetheart. They immigrated to Canada in 1955 with their firstborn. They had two more daughters while living in Toronto.
Sandy was employed over the years at several different architectural firms, before he opened his own business called “Architectural Renderings” in 1968. They lived in downtown Toronto, Willowdale, Georgian Bay, Whale Cay, (Bahamas) and eventually Millbrook.
Among Sandy’s accomplishments were being a sergeant in the Royal Core of Engineers (Scotland), holding a black belt in judo, being a keen photographer and an excellent pianist and had the ability to play almost any musical instrument, including the bagpipes. In his retirement years he continued to take pictures and to paint and to work on his novel.
Words of remembrance will be spoken for Mr. Duthie at 2pm on Sunday March 29, 2009 at Benson Funeral Home, 24 King Street East, with a visitation continuing until 4pm. In memory of Alexander please consider donations to
